The Most Important Journey Is the One You Never See

Panama wasn't supposed to be the destination.
It was supposed to be the connection.
It ended up changing the way I think about destinations altogether.

The humidity hit before the airport doors had even fully opened, and Panama stopped feeling like a layover.

Giant container ships glided across the water so quietly that their size felt almost surreal. The skyline rose from the Pacific with modern towers that could easily be mistaken for Miami. Just a few miles away, the colorful streets of Casco Viejo told a completely different story, where restored colonial buildings, rooftop restaurants, lively plazas, and centuries of history coexist with a vibrant, modern city.

The contrast never felt forced. It simply worked.

Before heading to the observation deck, my family and I watched the Morgan Freeman narrated IMAX film at the Miraflores Visitor Center. The film brought the canal to life long before we stepped outside. It gave us the history, the scale, and the human ambition behind one of the greatest engineering achievements of our time.

By the time we reached the observation deck, every ship passing through the locks carried a deeper story.

Everyone else seemed to be watching the ships.
I found myself watching the gates.
How could something so massive move with such precision?

The locks opened.
Water flowed.
Massive steel gates shifted almost effortlessly.
Within minutes, a ship carrying thousands of containers rose before my eyes.

The ocean hadn't changed.
The water level had.

As the ship continued its journey, applause rippled across the viewing deck.
My attention stayed on everything making that journey possible.

The engineering.
The planning.
The choreography.
Thousands of people and countless decisions working together so seamlessly that the system almost disappears.
That is what fascinated me most.

When something works beautifully, we rarely notice the complexity behind it.

Watching ships pass through the canal, it was impossible to ignore the scale of what had been accomplished. The ships were impressive. The system behind them was extraordinary.

Standing there, I kept thinking about the people who imagined this long before technology made it possible, and the generations that turned an audacious idea into something the world now takes for granted.

Perhaps that's why Panama stayed with me long after the visit.
The city itself is built on connections.

North and South America.
The Atlantic and Pacific.
History and modernity.
Global commerce and neighborhood cafés.

I traveled with my husband and our two teenagers, who would happily tell you the humidity was their least favorite part of the trip. Yet even they found plenty to enjoy. From wandering the streets of Casco Viejo to having dinner at a rooftop amusement park overlooking the city lights, Panama proved to be surprisingly family-friendly. We all experienced the same city, yet each of us came home with a different favorite memory.

Another pleasant surprise was how accessible Panama has become. Copa Airlines has transformed Panama City into the "Hub of the Americas," making it an easy stopover from cities across North, Central, and South America. Its Panama Stopover program makes it easy to turn what could have been a connection into a destination.

If you go, don't rush.
Watch ships transit the Miraflores Locks.
Take time to wander Casco Viejo after sunset.
Walk or bike the Amador Causeway for panoramic views of the skyline and canal entrance.
If your itinerary allows, add one of the nearby rainforest experiences to discover another side of Panama beyond the city.

Panama rewards curiosity.
Before this trip, I came home remembering places.
Panama reminded me to pay closer attention to the systems, stories, and people that make those places possible.

Sometimes the most memorable journeys aren't the ones that take us somewhere new.
They're the ones that quietly change the way we see the world after we return home.
